Figures from insurance federation Assuralia show that one in ten Belgian workers involved in a commuting accident on a speed pedelec end up permanently disabled. For e-scooter accidents, the figure is 9%. The data were presented on 16 September 2026, together with mobility minister David Clarinval.
Sharp growth in soft mobility
In 2025, insurers recorded 11,534 commuting accidents involving soft mobility (bicycles, e-bikes and e-scooters) — a 9.3% increase on 2024 and nearly 33% more than six years ago. Soft mobility now accounts for 45% of all commuting accidents in Belgium.
E-scooter accidents rose from 208 in 2019 to 1,456 in 2025 — more than a sevenfold increase. Speed pedelec accidents rose from 113 to 469, and ordinary e-bike accidents from 273 to 626. Average insurance costs range from €2,715 for temporary disability to €101,611 for permanent disability.
Ten safety tips
Alongside the figures, Assuralia presented ten practical tips for commuting by bicycle or motorised two-wheeler, emphasising route planning, visibility, helmet use and compliance with traffic rules.
Relevance for EHS professionals
Commuting accidents involving fast micromobility are a growing concern for employers worldwide, not just in Belgium: as more employees switch to e-bikes and e-scooters for their commute, part of the occupational accident risk shifts from the workplace to public roads.
