On 23 September 2026, the city of Trieste, Italy, will host the closing conference of a collaborative project between INAIL, the Port of Trieste and the local health authority to reduce workplace accidents in the port sector, INAIL Notizie reported on 16 September 2026. The event marks the conclusion of a 2023-2026 implementation agreement between INAIL, Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and the port authorities (Assoporti).
Three technical projects
The conference will present the results of three sub-projects. “Condivido” investigated tools for monitoring near-misses. “Safety 4.0” tested technological innovations such as modular laser barriers, advanced vision systems and a confined-space training simulator. “Ergonomia dei mestieri del Porto” focused on ergonomic bottlenecks in manual loading and unloading and postural strain, including experiments with exoskeletons for port work.
Technology as a complement, not a replacement
Regional director Angela Forlani stressed that port safety requires “new technologies and experimentation” to make prevention effective across institutions, companies and workers. The conference also includes an open discussion session with participating companies and safety representatives, and can be attended online.
For EHS professionals worldwide, this project illustrates how technological tools such as laser barriers and exoskeletons are being put to practical use to reduce physical strain and collision risks in ports – an issue relevant to virtually every port region due to the combination of heavy equipment and manual labour.
