During construction of the Tren México-Querétaro, a new railway line in Mexico, a vehicle carrying construction workers fell into an excavation on 17 October 2026. According to the Mexican social security institute IMSS, as cited by El Universal, two workers were killed and more than twenty others were injured. The cause of the accident has not yet been established.
Fall into a deep excavation
The accident occurred near the community of Agua Azul, in the municipality of El Marqués, in the Mexican state of Querétaro, about 200 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. El Marqués is one of the municipalities where the new railway line between the capital and the city of Querétaro is being built. According to initial reports, a vehicle carrying construction workers drove into a trench roughly eight meters deep that had been excavated for the rail project. The precise circumstances remain unclear.
IMSS activated its emergency protocols after the accident. According to preliminary reports, a total of more than twenty injured people were taken to hospitals in El Marqués, Pedro Escobedo and San Juan del Río, including at least one person in critical condition. Two workers did not survive the accident; one of them died despite resuscitation attempts. An earlier report on the same day mentioned one death; later reports, citing IMSS, put the number at two. The names or places of residence of the victims have not been released. Emergency services cordoned off the area.
Cause not yet established
Authorities have so far not issued an official statement on the cause of the accident. According to Mexican media, it has not yet been clarified how the vehicle ended up in the excavation. Nor has it been disclosed which contracting company was responsible for the vehicle or the work area. Neither the municipality of El Marqués nor the federal government had given an official response at the time of the initial reports. Nothing is yet known about possible responsibilities either. No conclusions about the cause can therefore be drawn at this time.
Context
According to a comparative study of construction fatality rates, Mexico ranks third worldwide for workplace accidents, after China and South Korea. According to figures from the Secretaría del Trabajo y Previsión Social (STPS) and IMSS, 290,527 workplace accidents were recorded in Mexico in 2023, with 340 fatalities. IMSS separately recorded 44,474 workplace accidents in the construction sector for 2024, putting construction in fourth place among sectors with the most accidents. Excavation work, working at height, and lifting and loading operations are cited as high-risk activities. Large infrastructure projects such as the Tren México-Querétaro typically combine several of these risks, such as heavy vehicle movements near open excavations. International guidelines for safe work around excavations generally call for physical barriers, clear marking and adapted vehicle routes, as well as restrictions on how close traffic may come to the edge of an excavation pit. Whether and how such measures were applied on this project is not known.
